2023-2024 Shaping the Future Sponsorship Program
ABEEL - the Alliance of Black Employee Experience & Leadership is a foundation that believes in simultaneously empowering and education present and future generations as instrumental to creating a society that is more diversified, equitable and inclusive.
The Shaping the Future Program aims to encourage youths across Canada to share their vision of a future without racism and bring to light all intersectional issues that stem from racism. Through this effort, we hope to engage students in meaningful dialogue about how they see racism manifest in their own lives, and what steps we can all take towards a less hateful - and more prosperous - future for us all. IMPORTANT DATES:
Come to the Career Centre and see Ms. Duffield for more information and how to sign up! |

BCIT ACE Program
Introductory Design and Technical Skills for Architecture,
Construction and Engineering
The ACE Microcredential – Introductory Design and Technical Skills for Architecture, Construction and Engineering, is a unique work-based entry level educational program designed to introduce high school students and recent high school graduates to the worlds of Architecture, Engineering and Construction. Students will be introduced to skills, concepts and terminologies used in these sectors, participate in site visits, work on both physical and digital models, and hear from leaders in these professions. The ACE Microcredential is delivered to students in a blended format, which includes classes held at BCIT’s Burnaby campus, virtual learning through BCIT’s Learning Hub platform, and fieldtrips to local design firms and construction sites. The aim of the ACE Microcredential is to build an understanding of the spectrum of careers that exist within these fields and to prepare students to explore those careers via this unique immersive polytechnic program.

Here is what Christy Alibudbud, recent Kwantlen Park Grad, June 2023, had to say about her experience in the program.
First off, the experience overall was great! Setting wise, there were about 18 of us and we stayed in one building that had a cafeteria which was convenient for lunches. Each classroom we had depended on the course (eg. Art Classes were set with tilt drafting tables for drawing).
In terms of content itself, it had variety with intensive lessons, but nothing I couldn’t manage. We had course schedules with a plethora of different professors teaching us the best they could in the 3-6 hour classes they had with us. We also had three field trips (Architecture Firm -@localpractice on instagram, Construction Site - Senakw Site, Engineering Company - RDH Engineering Company)
After the completion of this program, the students alongside me have the same amount of options available as a recent highschool graduate. If we choose this career path, we are able to start the Architectural and Building Tech. or Civil Engineering program (with saved seats of acceptance) with the credits we have. This program does not, however, allow us to take an advanced placement in the Building Technology diploma program. If a student decides to choose an alternate path, they can pursue any degree they would like. In fact, there is always an opportunity to get an offer at one of the internship companies.
As for myself, I am sure I want to stay within this industry. This program not only gave me an opportunity to finance my education through the internships, but allowed me to see a wide yet in-depth view of the growing industry which further helped me find out more about myself than I could have done if I had taken regular university courses right away. I am confident that urban construction is the pathway I would like to take, I am just deciding whether that path should lead me to an Architectural career or a Construction/Project Management career. In fact, the construction site visit over the summer and this Scott Construction internship are the factors that led me to this realization!
Courses included:
Building Communication
This was all to prepare us for our two 6-month internships for the next year! To decide on where we would be placed, the administrators sent out surveys of our preferences, living accommodations, and grades throughout the courses. There was even an opportunity for two students to go to Port Mellin for their internships (two weeks on, one week off). For my first 6-months, I will be at Scott Construction! I will get information about my second internship in March. We will also be doing 5 online courses while we work throughout the year (once a week I believe), so our schooling will continue.
Additionally, we were able to talk to Ministers of Eduction about our experience during their visit to BCIT. It allowed us to be professional and explain the extremities of our lives over the past 4 weeks. Since it is a pilot program, I’m sure there are things that are bound to change in terms of timing, scheduling, and course content (each course was extremely watered-down for the amount of time we had to learn, so I think that will change). However, the overall idea of this program is extremely beneficial for aspiring architects, construction workers, and engineers!

Celebrating our partnership with @bcit as part of the teaching team for the ACE Micro-Credential pilot program for high school students! Yesterday we provided feedback on their in-progress high-performance detail mock-ups based on our SFU Affordable Housing Project during a showcase for the program with the Minister of Education and Child Care of British Columbia and the new President of BCIT.
Amazing to see how invested the students were in this hands-on process, learning by doing is really the best way to understand something, and having the chance to experience this at their age is priceless.

SHAD Canada
An Interview with Eric Wang, grade 12, about SHAD 2023
Q. What program did you participate in? Can you give us a brief description?
The SHAD Canada program is a summer program that builds young adult’s skills in a whole host of areas in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)! The big-kicker of SHAD Canada is the option to live on one of the many partner university campuses for 1 month. In 2023, the campuses and universities participating were Waterloo, McGill, McMaster, Western, UBC, York, U-Calgary and many many more! SHAD provides the incredible experience of living in dorms, by yourselves, with food and all your amenities provided on top of undergraduates supervising, with other brilliant young adults from across Canada. Whether it was the Yukon to Prince Edward Island and Quebec.
You'll be able to conduct research, design new things, experience life in university, and explore your selected universities' campuses and cities. Trips out with your campus group to camp, and see the surrounding nature, and even the malls, are all guaranteed. With many more activities and opportunities, you may just need to find out for yourselves, wink wink.
Scholarships for participants of SHAD are available too, Waterloo provides a SHAD Alumni entrance scholarship, the YELL program has a scholarship, as well as many others!
Q. What did you learn? What was the highlight?
During SHAD we are put into groups of 7-8 people who are then tasked with a prompt, to design and build a solution for. This big project ran alongside the myriad of opportunities that we were provided on my campus, University of Calgary. Inspired by our professor, a solar energy researcher, our team produced a “BioPhotovoltaic Panel” that was able to harness wasted energy from the photosynthesis of plants and turn it into electricity! Our idea, research and business plan was then presented as a team to the Dean of U-Calgary, an architect and a business venture capitalist who were a judging panel.
It's not just all work though, for me the highlight was living with people who do, and will go on to accomplish many different and amazing things. Today, and even years in the future, my friends from SHAD and the people that I met will always be people I can contact and chat with. Continuing with more specifics, the camping trip, in the Albertan climate of ever-changing temperature, was a new experience, especially when it came to building a tent with 3 of my tent mates. Furthermore, The many talks given by entrepreneurs, a top Canadian lawyer dedicated to non-profits, a dean, and more, were invaluable advice! All in all, the experience was something that has changed me for the better, even outside of SHAD. It allowed me to know and partner with a fellow alumni at Fraser Heights to start a competition team!
Q. Would you recommend others to do it too?
Yes!, without a doubt if you are interested in doing great things, creating, exploring, making a change or even just curious about what freedom from your parents feel like, then apply! Don't let the competitive nature of the application intimidate you, trust me, they don't care about your grade. Concerned about the finances? I received a six-thousand dollar scholarship covering the whole cost of the program from start to finish! This was due to being a student at Kwantlen Park, who was underrepresented in the program and in a region of the lower mainland with far fewer applicants.
Take my word, the people and the experiences are going to be incredible!
